Choosing a paddle

What is the best pickleball paddle for a beginner?

For most beginners, a midweight paddle (around 210–230 g) with a polymer core and a fibreglass or carbon surface gives the best balance of control and forgiveness. You do not need to spend a fortune to get a genuinely good first paddle. As your game develops you will learn whether you want something lighter and more responsive, or heavier and more powerful. Browse the Fox paddle range to see the current lineup.

What does 16mm mean on a pickleball paddle?

16mm refers to the core thickness - the honeycomb layer between the two face surfaces. Thicker cores (16mm) absorb more impact and create a softer, more controlled feel with more dwell time. Thinner cores (13–14mm) are stiffer, produce more pop, and favour attacking players who generate their own pace. Most beginner and intermediate players find 16mm more forgiving.

Is a lighter or heavier pickleball paddle better?

It depends on your game. Lighter paddles (under about 207 g) give faster hand speed and more control at the kitchen line - good for dinking and quick exchanges. Heavier paddles (over about 235 g) add drive power but create more arm fatigue over time. For most recreational and club players a midweight paddle sits in the sweet spot. If you are new to the sport or returning from an arm injury, start lighter.

What is T700 carbon in a pickleball paddle?

T700 is a grade of carbon fibre with a high tensile strength - roughly 40% stronger than the common T300 grade. In a paddle face it provides an excellent stiffness-to-weight ratio, consistent energy return, and a textured surface that helps generate spin. Many higher-end paddles use T700 or above. Check each Fox paddle listing for its specific surface material.

How do I know what grip size to choose?

Measure from the bottom crease of your palm to the tip of your ring finger - most adults fall between 4.0 and 4.5 inches. If you are between sizes, go smaller: you can build up a grip with overgrip tape, but you cannot reduce an oversized handle. A grip that is too large restricts wrist action, while one that is too small can let the paddle twist on hard drives.

Can I use a tennis racket for pickleball?

No. The rules require a solid paddle - perforated or strung surfaces are not permitted. A tennis racket is also too heavy, too large and too long in the handle for comfortable play. Pickleball paddles are typically 15–17 inches in total length, within the official combined length-and-width limit.

Shipping & orders

Do you deliver across the whole of the UK?

Yes - we ship to UK addresses. Delivery is free on orders over £99; for orders below that threshold the cost is calculated at checkout based on your address. For current delivery timescales, see our shipping policy.

How will I know when my order has been dispatched?

You will receive a confirmation email when your order is placed, and a second email with your tracking reference as soon as it leaves us. You can also view your order history and current status in your account.

What is your returns and refunds policy?

Full details - including timeframes and how to start a return - are on our policies pages (Refund & Returns). In general, items must be returned unused and in their original condition within the returns window. Because a paddle’s surface condition affects its resale, we cannot accept returns on paddles that have been used on court, so read the paddle guide or contact us first if you are unsure.

Do you ship to Europe or internationally?

At present Fox Pickleball ships within the UK. If you are based elsewhere, contact us and we will do our best to help.

Paddle care

How do I clean a pickleball paddle?

After each session, wipe the face with a damp microfibre cloth to remove ball residue and sweat. For a deeper clean, use a paddle eraser or cleaning block on the surface to restore the grit texture that generates spin. Avoid household detergents, abrasive cloths, or running the paddle under water. Wipe the grip with a slightly damp cloth and dry it thoroughly.

How long should a pickleball paddle last?

A well-maintained paddle typically lasts one to three years for regular recreational play, or six months to a year under intensive daily use. The surface grit that generates spin wears down over time - when you notice reduced spin and a glassy feel on the face, the surface is past its best. The core can also develop dead spots if the paddle is dropped or struck on a hard surface.

Can I leave my pickleball paddle in the car?

No. Extreme heat or cold can damage the core, cause the face layers to delaminate, and shorten the paddle’s lifespan. Store your paddle at room temperature, ideally in a paddle bag or protective sleeve.

Events & clinics

Do you run events or clinics?

Yes - Fox runs capped clinics, socials and tournaments. When something is scheduled it appears under Events, with the number of spaces available. Sessions sell out, so it is worth checking regularly.

What skill level are Fox events for?

Each event listing specifies the level, from open beginner sessions to more competitive formats. If you are not sure which event suits you, contact us before booking.

Apparel & sizing

How should I size Fox apparel?

A size guide is on each product page. As a general rule, Fox performance tops have an athletic, close-but-not-restrictive fit to allow a full arm swing. If you are between sizes, size up for tops and size true for bottoms. If you are unsure, contact us.

What should I wear to play pickleball?

Moisture-wicking, breathable sportswear - similar to tennis or badminton kit. A performance top, shorts or a skort, and court shoes with good lateral support. Running shoes are not ideal as they are built for forward movement, not the quick lateral cuts pickleball demands. Browse Fox apparel for kit designed for court play.
